New Year-Fresh Start and an Offer You Can’t Resist!

February 5, 2016 |  by  |  Uncategorized  |  No Comments  |  Share

Greetings and Happy New Year 2016!

I hope that you all had a wonderful holiday season, and have begun your new year healthy and happy!

There is something cathartic about January. We make plans, all sorts of plans, and often times find them difficult to stick with…is that perhaps because we are stuck within the confines of an environment that is less than inspirational, peaceful or comforting? Are you experiencing any of these environmental symptoms and stressors?

  • clutter
  • worn out or broken furnishings
  • dark rooms with no light
  • outdated color palette

Setting the tone for new intentions, goals and rituals are a natural thing for us to think about and aspire to at this time of year.

With every New Year or season comes the birth of new ideas and plans. It is much like a jumping off place or ‘marker’ for creating a clean slate and new beginnings.

When I chose the name of my company, HOMEopathic SOULutions,  I intuitively knew my emphasis would be on the home and on the soul.

So I am so very excited to bring to light HOME/SOUL; Healthy Habits for your Health, Your Home and for Your Soul.

Helping you shift the energy in your home, remove clutter and create a more balanced, fun and relaxing environment is a way I can further be in service to you.

This is something that has always been second nature to me. I distinctly remember as early as 9 years old that I could manipulate my mood by rearranging the furniture in my room. If I was feeling blue, bored or perhaps in trouble for doing some outlandish thing, bringing about a fresh look brought about a fresh attitude!

As a Homeopathic Practitioner…I know the value of healing our whole selves and feel strongly that our personal environment plays a huge role in this, and most especially our home.

Creating that space to feel safe, regroup and shut out the chaos of everyday life is essential to our peace of mind.

I truly believe that when you walk through your front door your home should comfort you and help to dissolve the worries of the day.

Take a look at these cluttered rooms, and see how they make you feel energetically.

I barely can post them; they make me feel so chaotic!

Living in this environment can create all sorts of issues, especially in a family where you have to share your space with more than one person. Stay in this space for an extended period of time, and I can guarantee you’ll be in my office for a homeopathic remedy! Yikes!!!

How would it feel to gift yourself with a Fresh New Pick-Me-Up for the New Year?

Are you having trouble getting started?

Does your environment need a
Healthy Happy Home Remedy?

I would love to prescribe it one!

Since the month of February
is ‘The Month of LOVE’
I have a gift for you!

Homeopathy for Colds and Flu

November 25, 2015 |  by  |  Flu and Remedy  |  No Comments  |  Share

I began using homeopathy in the early 1990’s and was instantly amazed by its powerful and sometimes instantaneous punch! Watching a toddler in a full-tilt melt down mode go from a raging Tasmanian devil to a purring kitten, (Not my child of course ???? ) to witnessing a fever that is approaching the scary level break and reduce before your very eyes is nothing short of miraculous!

The benefits of homeopathy are far reaching, and a natural go to for me when it comes to acute colds and flus. With each ensuing year, we seem to be pressured more and more to get that pesky flu shot by well-meaning pharmacies and our health care providers, even though the efficacy levels fall short of providing true immunity or health. http://fightingdiseaseinourtoxicenviroment.com/2015/10/21/johns-hopkins-scientist-reveals-shocking-report-on-flu-vaccines/

We have become accustomed to believing that cold and flu season is imminent; that it is just part of the calendar year; like football season, the Holiday season, or the 4 Seasons; just by turning your calendar to September, will ultimately put you to bed with the flu. This power of suggestion is strong, especially if you spend much time watching television, or visiting Walgreens or CVS. Images such as these can be seen everywhere.

When I was in homeopathic school, we often heard the phrase; it’s not the seed, it’s the soil. Meaning, the environment and the susceptibility to disease, not just about being in the presence of or being exposed to disease. What precedes the seed sprouting? Can that seed make it on its own without the proper nutrients or environment to flourish? The same is true of disease. What preceded that illness? Were we in some kind of stressful situation? Perhaps not eating right or getting enough rest? Did we experience a traumatic loss or grief? Even a physical trauma can be the impetus to an acute or choric illness due to the jarring of our vital force. Our mental and emotional state and the life style we chose play a huge role in our susceptibility to disease.

Ben Franklin was quoted as saying
“An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure.”

We can avoid the flu and other pesky diseases just by making a few changes to our life styles. This doesn’t always have to be some grandiose change either. For those soda drinkers or sweet addicts, this simple change in your diet can make a world of difference. This link below is from Dr. Mercola, he has a wealth of information about preventative medicine on his website. http://articles.mercola.com/sites/articles/archive/2015/04/15/eliminate-processed-foods-soda.aspx

We cannot always predict or control the winds, as much as we may wish to believe, but for me, I will always choose a holistic approach to my health and wellness first.

Here is a list of some common homeopathic remedies for the colds and flu to have on hand:

Aconite/Aconitum napellas

Rapidly developing conditions in any organ system. Often times after exposure to cold winds fright or shock. This can knock a cold or flu off its feet if taken at the first sign of feeling ill. A leading symptom of this remedy is having one red cheek and one pale cheek. There can be flushes of heat, a bitter taste in the mouth and great thirst for unusually cold water. This is one of the main remedies for early stages of croup and sudden onset of pneumonia; patient may be worse lying on the left side. Again, the main theme of this remedy is sudden onset after chill or fright.

Allium Cepa

The great hay fever remedy. This remedy comes from the red onion, so think about what happens to you when you are cutting an onion. Copious amounts of nasal discharge “like a faucet” that is acrid, may even irritate the lip. Profuse lacrimation from the eyes which is bland. Headache which may be worse from closing the eyes. Severe pain in the throat with disposition to swallow, hoarseness and dry throat, severe tearing pain in the larynx during cough.

Arsenicum album

Think of this remedy when the stomach flu is present. Severe burning pains in the stomach, burning into the esophagus. Desire for small sips of cold water. Deathly nausea. Tongue discolored white. Diarrhea often with acrid, offensive watery stools. Patient may go to bed feeling fine and wake at midnight with complaints. Worse from 12 am to 2am. Extreme coldness and exhaustion. Pains are usually burning in nature, but are made better from heat, however head complaints are made better by cold, head may feel hot while body remains chilly. This patient may be extremely restless.

Belladonna

The acute conditions of this remedy start suddenly, often with high fevers and great intensity of the physical symptoms, the face is red and hot, the eyes glistening, pupils can be dilated and the feet and hands are cold. The illness comes on like a storm and rarely lasts long. Long lasting fevers will rarely respond to Belladonna, but first choice for fever coming on out of no where, worse after getting head wet or receiving a hair cut. Pains are often throbbing and right sided. Deep red color of the throat, swollen tonsils along with delirium or vivid hallucination, sometimes without prostration or much loss of energy. Patient may have explosive anger with a desire to strike or bite. All symptoms can be started by being chilled or becoming over heated. Belladonna is one of the key remedies for otitis media(ear infection) that is predominantly right sided with severe pain, worse at night in bed and is throbbing. Tympanic membrane is usually bulging. Acute suppurated tonsillitis, that is also right sided, pain worse from passage of air over inflamed part, averse to tight clothing around throat. Patient may crave lemons or lemonade but is often time thirstless.

Bryonia

This remedy is nicked name the Grumpy Bear! This patient wants to be left ALONE! Even someone coming into the room to check will aggravate this patient. There is a marked sensitivity to movement, so anyone disturbing this patient only makes it worse, least you may bump the bed. This remedy is predominately left sided, with headache over the left eye or forehead extending to the occiput then over the entire head. Everything is aggravated by motion. If this patient is coughing, Usually a dry painful cough, it is worse on rising and walking about, patient may hold chest while coughing in order to keep it still. Again, worse from movement. If there are stomach complaints, there is a great thirst for warm drinks. Laying perfectly still will amelirorate the stomach pains. Colds travel to chest.

Causticum

Chilly and worse from cold, aggravated by cloudy or wet weather. General aggravation from drafts. Constant desire to clear throat, feels there is mucous in the throat which clears with difficulty. Hoarseness, colds go to chest, worse with almost every cold, worse in the morning. Coughs deeper and deeper trying to reach mucous, better cold drinks.

Eupatorium preforliatum

Tremendous aching, as if bones are broken, great thirst for cold drinks, especially during the chill. Back pain excruciating especially lower lumbar area, chills felt first in the back. Influenza with high fever, flush, chills or even rigor with great thirst for cold drinks.

Head sensitive to uncovering(ear pain, headaches-babies need to wear hats) Severe and painful otitis media wakes at night shrieking and cannot be comforted. Ears sensitive to wind or open air. Stitching or splinter like pains in throat feels as if a chicken bone is stuck in throat. Croup, worse from exposure to wind or open air. Abscesses. Discharges, purulent (puss).

Kali Bich

This remedy is often thought of first when there is the first sign of discharges that are thick and gluey like and often green.(sign of infection) Sinusitis, nasal discharge or post nasal discharge is thick, purulent and stringy. Strong nasal quality to voice. Asthma, worse night, productive cough with thick or stringy green sputum in asthma and bronchitis.

Bland and often greenish discharges, chronic nasal obstruction. Conjunctivitis, allergic or infective. Thick yellow or greenish discharge from corners of the eye. Craves butter, cream or cheese. Fats of any kind but aggravates.

Oil of Oregano

This is truly one amazing supplement! A great go to for respiratory infections. One I have had personal experience with when I had a cough that lasted close to 3 months. I had tried everything, including homeopathy, antibiotics and much more. When this was recommended to me, my cough literally stopped within a few hours, and by the next day I was feeling nearly 100%. I use the Gaia brand sold at most health food stores.

In addition to these homeopathic remedies, there are other natural ways to help boost your immune system. Vitamin D deficiency seems to be on the rise, so supplementing your diet during the winter months, especially those of you that live outside of Southern California, where we have sunshine 12 months of the year is very helpful. I especially like the Arbonne Vitamin D Spray, it includes Vitamin B12 as well. YOU CAN PURCHASE IT HERE
Vitamin C is also incredibly helpful at the first sign of illness. I like Garden of Life Vitamin Code Raw Brand. This is a GMO free whole food product that can be found at most health food stores. Or at www.vitacost.com
Juicing and a diet rich in whole foods is an essential must. Here is a quick and easy concoction you can make at home.

I hope you have found this newsletter helpful. I am very grateful to have such wonderful clients, and I wish you a wonderful Holiday Season surrounded by friends and family and lots of love! Please feel free to reach out if you have any questions.

March News : Grief & Depression

March 24, 2015 |  by  |  Monthly Newsletter  |  No Comments  |  Share

A HOMEOPATHIC PERSPECTIVE:

GRIEF & DEPRESSION

Grief is one of the deepest of all human emotions. It can strike at any time; when we least expect it to, or it can linger for years causing us to withdraw from life, society, family and friends. Grief can rob us of our joy, our passions and purpose for living. It can also be the underlying cause of chronic illness.

In homeopathy we believe that all symptoms are an outward sign of an inward disturbance. By the time we see symptoms appearing on the physical level, much has happened at the mental, emotional and spiritual levels; often times long before these symptoms begin to occur, or are even recognized. It is within the holistic communities that chronic illness is understood to begin here. Yes, there are environmental contaminates ( I just recently saw Erin Brockovich for the first time, wow, what an amazing story)not to mention the host of problems that stem from over vaccination; but more often than not it is our suppressed or unresolved emotions that are responsible for wreaking havoc on our physical bodies. This is where holistic medicine and conventional medicine sometimes are at odds with one another; these underlying disturbances cannot be measured, put in a petri dish, or looked at under a microscope. There is not an exact protocol to follow and execute. We cannot measure a life time of suppressed grief, humiliation, abuse or what have you, and put a definitive marker on them. These states can also be handed down for generations, hidden at the deepest molecular level, present in our DNA. We pass on much more to our children than our brown hair, blue eyes, dark skin, dark eyes etc. We are just beginning to tap into the understanding that our mental and emotional states are passed down through cellular memory. Think of our ancestors who experienced war, famine, or some kind of violence. The good news is that the tides are shifting, and a greater importance is being put on our mental, emotional as well as spiritual state of being and a deeper understanding of how trauma and grief can be handed down to ensuing generations.

Grief, sadness and anger are normal human emotions. There is a lot of stigma still surrounding depression forcing us into this “I am fine” façade that we tend to live in; especially here in this American society; a white knuckling sort of state; the suppressed state to which I am referring to. There are so many societal norms that are placed on us; the should and should not’s. What is the appropriate time to grieve after the loss of a loved one; a year, two years? Who is to say? How long do we harbor resentment for the abuse we suffered from a parent or at the hand of a spouse or other family member? What is the correct formula for dealing with these deep emotional issues? Unfortunately only a small percentage of Americans have been exposed to other healing modalities besides antidepressants. There is a time and place for these types of drugs; however they should be used sparingly and for the short term. Chronic depression needs to be addressed with a combination of modalities that work to get to the underlying cause, not just at the superficial level. Homeopathy works at the molecular level to stimulate healing, and to uproot and clear the many layers that make up a life time of bumps and bruises, present in each and every one of us.

You may want to consider a homeopathic evaluation for any of the following symptoms

  • Sadness
  • Grief
  • Loss of Motivation
  • Desire to Isolate
  • Exhaustion
  • Self Medicating with Drugs or Alcohol
  • Apathy
  • Irritability and Anger
  • Mood Swings
  • Over Eating
  • Insomnia
  • Hopelessness
  • Low Self Esteem and Feelings of Unworthiness
  • Guilt Feelings
  • Disturbing Nightmares
  • Restlessness

Everyone experiences illness and disease in a variety of ways. Homeopathy treats the entire person; body, mind and emotion, stimulating the body’s ability to heal itself naturally on the deepest level. It has been an honor and a privilege to help my clients through dark emotional times and walk with them into a lighter, happier state of being. Homeopathy has been treating mental and emotional issues for over 200 years.

Greetings! And Happy New Year 2014!!

February 5, 2014 |  by  |  Uncategorized  |  No Comments  |  Share

I hope you all had a wonderful holiday season and you are making your way into this New Year, happy and healthy!!

As fate would have it, a Christmas Holiday card was in the works from me and my family, but due to forces beyond my control (a lack of technical proficiency on my part) the card never made it from my computer to the printer!!!

2014 brings a lot of wonderful changes here at Homeopathic Soulutions and for my family as well. I have recently moved my office from my Vulcan Ave address to my home here in Leucadia. I have always envisioned an office here on my own turf, with a desire to share my many blessings of a peaceful garden setting and a relaxed setting so my clients can feel comforted and supported. I know you will all enjoy my new office with its easy access and off street parking.

New Year’s brings about new plans, goals and adventures! Looking forward with eager anticipation and joyful hope for what lies ahead! It’s a time to put things in to perspective, think about where the last year went, what milestones occurred, and perhaps looking at the areas where there is still room for improvement and change.

Change takes courage and determination. Moving beyond and out of our comfort zone is not for the faint of heart; where there is no change there is no growth, where there is no discomfort there will inevitably be no comfort.

I have spoken often about the “quick-fix” society we live in and the dangers that it presents. I will continue to toot my little horn and stand on my veritable soap box to do my part to bring about the winds of change.

The question is; will 2014 be your year for change? Will this be the year you decide to break  through those physical and emotional challenges you are avoiding and ask yourself what is staying in the same “lane” costing me, and how is tolerating it another day going to benefit me?

Homeopathy has been safely, gently and affectively helping people with acute and chronic illness for over 200 years; not just treating the symptoms but getting to the underlying cause.  Putting those puzzle pieces together and working towards lasting and permanent change.

It has been an absolute pleasure working with all of you these past few years. I truly appreciate the opportunity to help you and your families with all that ails you, celebrating all your successes!

I am offering a free follow up session for anyone who refers my practice to someone this next year, to show my appreciation for your faith and trust in me.

Wishing you all a very Happy and Healthy New Year!
Warmly,

Julie and Family

Cold and Flu Remedy Pictures

It’s hard to believe, but another season is coming to an end, and here we are at fall again, back to school and the beginning of holiday season! One of my friends, who is a manager at a local pharmacy, said they are already putting up Christmas decorations! Hard to believe! Here in San Diego, summer is really just beginning! The coastal fog is dissipating, and that yearly Indian summer is upon us. I think this is the best season just about anywhere you go in the world.

Along with the change of season, it’s back to school, the “kick off” of football season, and also the kick off of cold and flu season.

As a homeopath, I have the great privilege of helping people not only with what ails them physically, but also with what is disturbing them on a mental and emotional level. You may have often heard that the holistic approach is three fold; mental, emotional and physical. The good news is that this understanding is making its way into conventional medicine. However slowly, we are making progress! We cannot separate out our emotions from our physical ailments, they are interconnected.

Lately many of my friends have been posting adorable pictures of their children’s first day of school on Facebook. Not having little ones any longer makes me realize how precious this time is and how fast it goes. I think we forget that this time of year can be somewhat frightening and nerve wracking for little ones. There may even be apprehensions for the older ones, not to mentions kids going off to college for the first time. All these events have a direct effect on our health and wellness. As adults we often tend to forget the daily struggles of growing up, we are often too wrapped up in paying mortgages, running our businesses and perhaps dealing with aging parents, that we fail to notice the emotional ups and downs of childhood.  It is very common for a child to get sick following an emotional upset. Emotional trials can weaken our immune systems, making us susceptible to colds and flus. Children exposed to constant fear such as abuse or a sudden loss of a parent can have long lasting health issues. I have yet to encounter an adult patient who is struggling with chronic illness that did not have some serious trials as a child. There is nothing that infuriates me more than to see parents who are not making the mental/emotional state of their child a priority.

Julie’s husband Helmut and their three daughters

I feel so incredibly blessed that I discovered homeopathy when my three daughters were little. Homeopathy supported them through the bumps and bruising of growing up, puberty and the transition into adult hood! Now it supports me as I mourn the loss of that time!!! Empty nest syndrome is real!! Maybe that will be the subject of next month’s blog!  For now, here are a few things that are must haves for the upcoming cold and flu season.

Homeopathy for Nursing Moms

Homeopathy for Nursing Moms

The list of ailments that homeopathy covers is long reaching!!! However this newsletter I thought I would spend some time covering some new mom issues. Last month we covered menopause, it’s only fair to reach out to those young nursing moms!

As I have said before, I came to homeopathy when my three daughters were babies; it truly changed our lives, and led me down the road to becoming a practitioner myself. It is now my greatest joy to reach out and help young families on the path to a safe and drug free home!

As we have finally learned over these past few decades that mother’s milk is the best! It’s why we have breasts and produce milk. No other species uses artificial means except humans! Somehow we were led down the garden path; man made is better than God made-go figure!! Young mothers need a lot of support if they are to be successful at breast feeding. For some, it comes very naturally, while others truly struggle. It is important if you have a family member that is having difficulty nursing to be as supportive as possible. The last thing you want to do is make them feel less than or to tell them how great and easy it was for you! Encourage them to seek the advice of professionals if you don’t feel you have the skills or the “bed-side manner” to do so. Look up your local chapter of La Leche League, or talk to the birthing center at your local hospital. If you happen to know a mid-wife or doula, all the better.

Mastitis is an infection of the breast tissue that results in breast pain, swelling, warmth and redness of the breast. If you have mastitis, you might also experience fever and chills. Mastitis most commonly affects women who are breast-feeding (lactation mastitis), although sometimes this condition can occur in women who aren’t breast-feeding.(Mayo Clinic)

It is important to know that you can absolutely continue to nurse during mastitis, as you may know, it is encouraged to help undo the blockage. Mastitis is also a sign that the body is telling the mom to slow down, rest and spend time with baby nursing. I found this link for some natural relief from mastitis.

I have also included a list of the most common homeopathic remedies for Mastitis. This is the most precious time as a young mother; remember to relax and reach out for help when you need it; don’t go it alone! Enjoy! It’s the best thing you can do for your child! You won’t regret it!

Homeopathic Remedies for Mastitis

Aconite: sudden onset (like  Belladonna), but without the throbbing pain. The onset often follows a sudden change of weather or exposure to cold air or a cold, dry wind. Usually another remedy is required after Aconite, such as  Belladonna or Bryonia.

Arnica: for inflammation follows an injury to the breast. Patients feel sore, bruised, and achy. There is fear to have the part touched.

Belladonna: sudden onset with rapidly rising fever. The breast is hot to touch, engorged, swollen, congested — red, hot breast. Throbbing pain in the breasts. The pain is worse from jarring. The right side is more often affected.

Bryonia: begins often with general chills and fever, stitching pains in the breast and headache. The breast feels hard and stony with stitching, needle-like pains. Any movement aggravates the pain. The patient likes a snug bra. Breast feeding is quite painful. The patient will be quite irritable. Very frequently the patient will experience dizziness or faintness on rising from bed. There is strong thirst and not infrequently constipation.

Croton tiglium: excruciating pain in the nipple which extends straight through to the back (at the level of the shoulder  blade) with each suck of the baby. The breasts are very inflamed, swollen, and hard. The nipples may crack.

Hepar sulphur: breasts are very prone to abscess. Extreme sensitivity to the least touch; mothers can’t stand for the baby to nurse. Complaints are worse from cold and exposure to the least draft, and better from warmth.

Lac-canium: hypersensitivity to even the slightest touch of clothing on the breasts; jarring also aggravates.

Mercurius: fever, chills, and perspiration without relief; a profuse sweat with a drop in fever; but no subsequent improvement; the patient alternates between hot and cold, uncovering and covering.

Phytolacca: the most common remedy (covers about 50% of mastitis cases.) Breasts become lumpy, with hard knots or nodules, the nipples cake. Sore, fissured nipples. Intense pain in the breast as soon as the baby takes hold of the nipple. The pain often extends to the underarm or it can radiate over the whole body. Favors the right breast. Damp heat relieves, such as local poultices. Some patients may have flu-like symptoms

Menopause-Really???

June 6, 2013 |  by  |  Uncategorized  |  No Comments  |  Share

So, I was one of those lucky ones. I never had a difficult period, never experienced severe cramping, irregular cycles, mood swings or even that occasional weight gain. I got pregnant when I wanted to and my periods returned normally after nursing just as before. My mother and grandmother were, are, two very practical women. My grandmother told my mother “it’s not a big deal to start your period, and it’s not a big deal to end your period!” In turn, my mother said the same thing to me and my two sisters. For the most part, this has been absolutely true! Kind of!

Enter my 40′s! I can’t say I went gracefully into this decade. What happened to my 30′s? Wait a gosh darn minute! (Other words were said, but are not appropriate for this blog!) Life turned on a dime for my husband and I, there was a downturn not only in my husband’s industry, but in the entire country financially. Suddenly my stress levels were off the chart, and for the first time in my life I experienced real fear and got a taste of what depression is all about. I am a firm believer that thoughts are things, so my grandmother’s philosophy on women’s issues, I can truly get behind. I have often wondered if how much of what women suffer during menopause, actually comes from the over talking about menopause, and the amount of information found on the internet.  You can find any illness you like on the internet, and if you read long enough about it you can convince yourself that you actually have that illness.

HOWEVER, I write this blog today, just a few weeks shy of my 51st birthday. It’s taken me nearly 11 years to get used to being 40, and now here I am 50, ( I’m pretty sure it’s going to take me until I’m 70 to get used to that number!)and well, I can’t say that menopause is the “no big deal” my mother and grandmother spoke of. It is, and can be a pretty big deal; and it’s not just the physical things that happen to us but what is going on with us mentally and emotionally that can be truly debilitating.

Menopause is normal, it’s natural, it’s something that is supposed to happen, but it’s not the same for every woman! It’s not a one size fits all. Some suffer tremendously from the physical changes taking place; hot flashes, bloating, weight gain and brain fog, fatigue and insomnia, while others are pretty sure they have become bi-polar! This is what I love about homeopathy. No matter what the situation, homeopathy is asking Why, not just What.  What is going on individually? What is going on in the totality of the person, physically, mentally and emotionally?  I know beyond a shadow of a doubt, that my stress levels and my personal situation are the contributing factors making it far more difficult to transition through this “Change”. So, “thinking myself well” during this time hasn’t been all that easy. I’m pretty sure I’m going to shoot the next person that posts some positive platitude on Face Book! Yep, that’s right, Bi-polar!

There are many things that are very different for this generation going through menopause. We are a lot younger at 50 than our grandmothers and mothers were at this same age. We think differently, work differently, exercise differently. Some of us didn’t start having a family until we were in our 40′s. We have a lot more choices and freedoms compared to what they had. We feel much younger at 50 than our grandparents did. Unfortunately, I feel  there is a trade off though between our grandmothers’ time and this time. They weren’t being bombarded with every possible drug known to man kind; “oh, you don’t want to have your period for a year??? No problem, take this drug!” “Don’t want to feel any signs of menopause? Well, here take this.”  “Don’t want to be inconvenienced in any way, well, you don’t have to be!”   Our grandparents food supply was healthier, there were less toxins used in the home, and they didn’t have cell phones tethered to their hips;  it was a different time.  We think we are so much more enlightened right? We have so much more at our disposal! We have conveniences they didn’t. And yet, we have cancer! A lot more cancer than they ever knew, and I’m not buying the “they didn’t know” line! We keep hearing that people are living longer, but are they really? People in their 80′s are living longer, but people in their 30′s are not. What we are not understanding about our choices and the array of medications we take is that they are altering the natural way our body is meant to function. Hence all the side affects, the bodies way of responding to suppression. You make the body do something it’s not supposed to do, it’s going to act out! Remember that commercial; “Its not nice to fool Mother Nature”! Well, it’s not, and that  in fact is what we are doing, and don’t get me started on GMO’s! A convenience is no convenience if it is harming our bodies, our minds and our earth! So what do we do when faced with a difficult transition during menopause?

Here are a few homeopathic tips I recommend.

1: Seek out the help of a Certified Classical Homeopath and let them take your case. There are several homeopathic remedies geared for menopause depending on what symptoms you are experiencing. This is where I would start. Hormone Replacement Therapy will always be there, why not try a more natural approach first. Homeopathy is designed to put the entire body into balance at the molecular level, so it can do what it is designed to do, and that is to heal itself.  Here are a few basic homeopathic remedies to choose from.

  • Belladonna-One of the most important remedies for this problem, where there is restlessness, agitation, and a red, burning face, often with palpitations and great intolerance of pressure, touch or any sudden jarring or unexpected motion.
  • Crotalus-Only use this for the most severe cases and after Lachesis. The face is flushed almost blue with congestion, there is an associated headache, and a tendency to bleeding-either nosebleeds or a heavy uterine loss. Nearly all symptoms are worse after sleep, and the woman is restless, anxious and often weak.
  • Kreosotum-This is a useful intermediate remedy where there are problems of burning heat, which is always better from warmth. (Note the unusualness of this symptom, hot but better from heat) Unlike Pulsatilla the symptoms often spread to involve the whole body with heat and sweats.
  • Lachesis-For many women this is the most important remedy of all, and nearly always required at some time during the treatment. There is a sweating with flushing, and often violent headaches on the top of the scalp. All symptoms are worse in the morning, worse for sleep, and there is a typical peculiar combination of talkativeness and intolerance of any form of constricting pressure to the body, such as tight clothes around the abdomen and neck.
  • Pulsatilla-A useful deep acting remedy for somewhat milder and very variable symptoms of flushing, always worse for heat. Apart from the face, the rest of the body may be quite chilly. Tears and weepiness are almost always present.
  • Sulphur-This remedy is a good choice for more chronic cases where there is an intolerance of heat in any form, together with diarrhea, and often infection with discharge in some part of the body.

2: Exercise, exercise, EXERCISE!!! And did I say exercise???  Please, make exercise a priority. Yoga is my very favorite. It works, I promise! Getting our endorphins up and getting out hearts pumping reduces stress and cortisol levels, helps to balance the immune system and the endocrine system. The mental/emotional benefits are priceless. Don’t think about it, just do it!

3: Nutrition!  A whole food approach to your health and wellness will help with pretty much anything and everything that ails you. If it comes in a can or a bag or a box, probably a good idea not to use those products. Try it for a week, and see where you land at the end of 7 days. Seek out your local Farmers Market and start buying locally grown foods. For a real change, try a vegan diet for awhile. It doesn’t have to be permanent, but by taking out certain foods for awhile, and adding them back in slowly  you will be able  to see what does and doesn’t make you feel well.  Eliminating alcohol will also help tremendously, especially wine. The amount of sugar in wine can really disrupt your sleep, cause excess bloating and as we all know it is a depressant, so if you find you are having more than two glasses at a time, you may want to examine your  motives.

4: Supplements. I am currently taking a Menopause Support supplement from Arbonne called Women’s Balance . Check it out HERE (in Nutrition Section). It is an all natural product including:  Milk Thistle, Dong Quai, Red Clover, Goji Berry, Black Cohosh and a few others. This has greatly reduced the intensity of my hot flashes as well as frequency. Arbonne also carries a progesterone cream available by request. Please feel free to email me for more information.

5: Do something you love and are passionate about. Make the time weekly if not daily to spend time doing the things that bring you peace and joy. This I think is the most crucial and important point. Maybe it’s just having lunch with a girlfriend, or working in your garden, but make time as often as possible to put some laughter in your day. Schedule yourself out of your schedule and stick to it! We are always talking about finding balance in our lives, but if we don’t make a concerted effort to do so, it’s just a bunch of hot air. Give yourself permission.

Lastly, know that you are not crazy!! You may feel like you are and that there is no end in sight. My mother always told me “this too shall pass, it’s just a season.” I am grateful for the wisdom of those who came before me, and thankful for my mother who at 84 still refuses to take any medications. ( I do have her on a few homeopathic’s for arthritis, but who can fault her for that!) Be patient with yourself, know that it is ok to mourn what is no longer, and delight in the  new life that is yet to come.

Seasonal Allergy News

April 25, 2013 |  by  |  Natural Healing  |  No Comments  |  Share

Spring has definitely come to San Diego in these past few weeks, and along with that comes, for some, the dreaded allergy season! If this is a difficult time for you, and daily sneezing, watery eyes, runny nose and an overall feeling of yuckiness is “your normal” for the next several months, you may want to consider seeking the help and advice of a homeopath.

Homeopathy is different to the conventional approach for allergies. The conventional approach is to suppress symptoms with medications (ie., antihistamines, decongestants, steroid nasal sprays, bronchodilators, etc) as well as avoiding  the triggers that make us worse. While this approach may give you relief, it is only temporary until the next season rolls around. Often times these allergy medications hold some stiff side effects as well.  For some, this time of year may have you feeling like a hostage to the season, and who in Southern California wants to be indoors when the weather is so gorgeous!

Homeopathy gets to the root cause, strengthening the immune system that is over reacting to the environment through these allergy symptoms. The solution to preventing the recurrence of these symptoms is to put the body back into balance, so that the body is no longer sensitive to allergy triggers, whether they be spring pollens, dust, or animal dander.

Besides homeopathy, there are some dietary changes that can also help to strengthen the immune system and put the body in balance. You may want to consider a gluten-free or dairy free diet during these more difficult months. This seems like a catch all approach these days, but I have seen people improve greatly just by making this simple change to their diets.

Incorporating a few supplements into your daily regime also helps. Consider the following:

  • Quercetin 400 mg, 2 times a day to stabilize histamine releasing cells
  • Bromelain 1000mg, 3 times a day between meals to reduce inflammation
  • Vitamins A, B-complex and C with bioflavonoids also will help strengthen and support you throughout this time.

And for homeopathic support, consider the following remedies for short term relief:

  • Allium cepa-burning discharge from nose, bland discharge from eyes, light hurts the eyes, sticking/pricking sensation in the larynx.
  • Euphrasia-eyes very swollen with thick burning discharge, bland discharge from the nose, coughing up phlegm, feels worse indoors.
  • Sabadilla-violent sneezing, itchy nose, red and swollen eyelids, runny eyes, headache as if head is shrinking, chilly, person’s thinking is dull and slow.
  • Nux vomica-stuffiness and blocked breathing, itchiness inside of ears, the eyes burn and are sensitive to light, person is irritable.
  • Pulsatilla-bland yellow discharge from the nose and eyes, weepy or tearful disposition, person feels better in open air.
  • Arsenicum album-wheezing and tightness in lungs, burning in throat, person is restless and worried.
  • Arundo-early in hay fever season with tickly nose and sneezing, no discharge, roof of mouth is itchy.

All of these remedies can be purchased at your local health food store or by going on line to Hahnemann Labs or calling them at 888-427-6422. The common method for dosing is in the 30c potency, three pellets repeated every 2-4 hours until improvement. If there is no improvement, consider one of the other remedies, or seeking the advice of a local professional homeopath.

So, get out there and do what you love best, whether it’s a hike in the hills, a walk on the beach or gardening in your yard. Don’t let seasonal allergies get you down for one more day! Enjoy!!

Natural Support For the Stomach Flu

February 7, 2013 |  by  |  Uncategorized  |  No Comments  |  Share

We’ve all been there! Something starts to rumble in your tummy, it takes you off guard, grabs you from behind! Is it something I ate, do I have gas, or could it be, please NO, am I about to get sick?  Suddenly you remember your neighbor, friend or colleague mentioning something about being sick last week. Now the nausea sets in, you begin to feel flush, is it hot in here??? The rest I will leave up to your imagination, but  during those moments, making a pack with the devil isn’t too far off base! Please, anything but the STOMACH FLU!!

This year the flu is hitting hard all across America. Some are suffering from the more traditional influenza with the bone aching, fever, chill, can hardly get out of bed flu, while others are suffering from various forms of the stomach flu such as RotaVirus. Fortunately for those open to natural health, homeopathy is the perfect go to! Have no FEAR, HOMEOPATHY IS HERE!!!

There are several remedies for the stomach flu, and I will list a few of them here.

Arsenicum album-A  must have in any natural medicine cabinet. Think burning pains, deathly nausea, tongue is coated and white. There may be a frantic, restless, anxious quality to the patient.  They are chilly and definitely aggravated by cold. There may be a burning sensation in the esophagus  or stomach with a desire for small sips of water, however liquids are poorly tolerated and are often immediately vomited. There may be diarrhea often with acrid, offensive, watery stool.

Veratrum album-gastroenteritis with simultaneous vomiting and diarrhea. Projectile vomiting, with violent diarrhea. This patient is also cold, and worse from cold, but at some level an even deeper chilliness than Arsenicum.  There may be a cold sweat, especially on the forehead, with cold breath. There is an extreme state of weakness and collapse.

Podophyllum-One of the more common acute diarrhea remedies. A first go to. Profuse diarrhea  often mixed with gas and sputtering. Explosive diarrhea, soils the entire toilet bowl. Stool is watery and profuse and sometimes horribly offensive. Stool may be yellow, pasty or mucus filled or may even contain blood. Abdominal pain, and cramps, worse before or during stool, better after stool or from holding abdomen or bending forward.

Ipecacuahna-(homeopathic ipecac that is)Whenever nausea and vomiting are the prominent element of a case we often  think of this remedy. There is NO relief from the nausea, even after vomiting. Constant nausea which is incapacitating;stomach seems to hang loose inside;nausea unrelieved by vomiting. There may be a migraine headache accompanying the nausea. Keynote to this remedy is a remarkably clean tongue despite the stomach issues.

There are many more homeopathic remedies for the flu, but these are surely the few that are often best to have on hand. You can purchase these at any health food store without a prescription. A 30c or 200c is a great place to start.

It is often hard to avoid the stomach flu, even for those in the best of shape and the strongest immune systems. Sometimes it just gets you! As far as other types of flus, you can do a lot to avoid it. I have said in the past, grandmothers old fashioned philosophies are best to ad hear to. A healthy diet is crucial. A diet rich in refined sugars will most certainly land you in bed with the flu if you get exposed. Drinking plenty of fluids, using Airborne if exposed or Emergen-C are great ways to help.  Homeopathy has been treating the flu safely and effectively for over 200 years. Help is just a phone call away!

Holiday Madness!

November 18, 2012 |  by  |  Uncategorized  |  No Comments  |  Share

With the holidays literally around the corner, I thought it might be a great time to remind my friends and clients of the wonderful miracle of homeopathy.

Holiday time can be a stressful time for many people. It can also be a difficult time if you are still recovering from the loss of a loved one, divorce or a recent move that prevents you from being with family and friends.

The most important thing to remember is that we all have control over our own actions. We don’t have control over others actions. This may sound cliché, and for many this can be an annoying reminder of the fact we can’t change the behaviors of the people we would most definitely love to change!

So, let’s all take a deep breath, relax and enjoy the things we do have control over. For everything else, here are a few suggestions.

Rescue Remedy-A wonderful, gentle Bach Flower tincture that helps with mild anxiety and depression, or in anticipatory stress brought on by a big event, job interview, performance or the like.  This can be taken several times throughout the day, or even several times within an hour. There are varying degrees of sensitivity to this, so you may need to play around with it a bit. Some notice no change while following the directions on the bottle, while others notice a profound change, and may even become quite sleepy. I suggest you start with the directions found on the label and increase the dose gradually as needed.

Yarrow Environmental Solution (YES Drops) Like Rescue Remedy, this is a gentle tincture to help with mild anxiety, however, the difference is found in the underlying cause. YES drops are perfect for the person who is quite sensitive to everyone around them, they seem to take on other people’s negativity and have difficulty with boundaries. They are profoundly affected by what ails others, or the environment in which they are in. Again, best to follow the directions on the label, or speak to your Homeopathic Practitioner or Holistic Health Practitioner.

Ignatia-This homeopathic remedy is one of the signature remedies for grief and loss. This can be an old loss, dating back many years or recent as of the day. The marked keynote symptom here is endless weeping or sighing and can escalate to hysterical sobbing. There also, can be the sensations as if a lump in the throat. The thing to remember when using this remedy is the overwhelming sense of grief that is openly expressed. There are other remedies for folks that have suppressed grief, finding it difficult to share their emotions and stuff old wounds and losses. Please ask me or your practitioner about these other remedies if this seems more like what you are experiencing.

Nux Vomica-A must have for the holidays!!! A great remedy for acute over indulging!! Too much food, drink or even work. Indigestion brought on by excessive drinking or eating heavy meals. There can be pain, or nausea and sensitivity to pressure on the abdomen, like a belt that is too tight.  There can be marked irritability with sensitivity to noise, light and company.

Carbo Vegetabilis-Similar to Nux vomica, but more of a collapsed-worn out state. There can be shortness of breath, desire for fresh air or a desire to be fanned, much bloating and distention above the navel; flatulence, eructation’s and aerophagia (air swallowing) brought on by the difficulty in digesting fats. There may be a sensation of a warm head with a cool body.

Aresenicum Album-Now this is getting fun-the great food poisoning remedy. Foul smelling diarrhea with burning pains, relieved by warmth. Marked nervousness, restlessness and sometimes panic, often times waking with symptoms at 1am. (Goes to bed fine, but wakes then) The marked sypmtomogly here is the burning pains. There are times one can have painless diarrhea, this is not for that.

Veratrum album-Another fun one! This is for the combination of vomiting and diarrhea. Characteristic signs and symptoms are or can be; generalized icy coldness of the skin, cold sweating accompanied by copious amounts of diarrhea and projectile vomiting.

Ipecacuanha-we have all heard of giving ipecac when the desired response is to make a person vomit after ingesting a poisonous substance, however, when we use ipecac homeopathically, it is for the opposite of that. Homeopathic ipecac is for extreme nausea and vomiting where there is no relief after vomiting. We have all experienced a flu bug when  eventually vomiting brings about  relief, even if only temporarily. However, the marked expression of this remedy is constant, continued nausea with no relief.  Another sign to look for in addition to this type of nausea is a clean tongue. Many times in these situations the patient may have a white, coated tongue.

These are just a few suggestions of many available homeopathic remedies. It is best to start with a 30c potency which can be purchased at your local health food store, or found on line at Hahnemann Labs, or by calling 888-427-6422.

These suggestions are for acute use, and as always, if symptoms persist for more than 48hours it is best to consult your MD or find your way to urgent care.

I wish all of you a Blessed and Happy Thanksgiving! Remember to count your blessings, not your losses, take a deep breath and ENJOY!!!
