Natural Remedies for Grief and Depression

A HOMEOPATHIC PERSPECTIVE:

GRIEF & DEPRESSION

Grief is one of the deepest of all human emotions. It can strike at any time; when we least expect it to, or it can linger for years causing us to withdraw from life, society, family and friends. Grief can rob us of our joy, our passions and purpose for living. It can also be the underlying cause of chronic illness.

In homeopathy we believe that all symptoms are an outward sign of an inward disturbance. By the time we see symptoms appearing on the physical level, much has happened at the mental, emotional and spiritual levels; often times long before these symptoms begin to occur, or are even recognized. It is within the holistic communities that chronic illness is understood to begin here.

Yes, there are environmental contaminates ( I just recently saw Erin Brockovich for the first time, wow, what an amazing story)not to mention the host of problems that stem from over vaccination; but more often than not it is our suppressed or unresolved emotions that are responsible for wreaking havoc on our physical bodies.

This is where holistic medicine and conventional medicine sometimes are at odds with one another; these underlying disturbances cannot be measured, put in a petri dish, or looked at under a microscope. There is not an exact protocol to follow and execute. We cannot measure a life time of suppressed grief, humiliation, abuse or what have you, and put a definitive marker on them. These states can also be handed down for generations, hidden at the deepest molecular level, present in our DNA. We pass on much more to our children than our brown hair, blue eyes, dark skin, dark eyes etc.

We are just beginning to tap into the understanding that our mental and emotional states are passed down through cellular memory. Think of our ancestors who experienced war, famine, or some kind of violence. The good news is that the tides are shifting, and a greater importance is being put on our mental, emotional as well as spiritual state of being and a deeper understanding of how trauma and grief can be handed down to ensuing generations.

Grief, sadness and anger are normal human emotions. There is a lot of stigma still surrounding depression forcing us into this “I am fine” façade that we tend to live in; especially here in this American society; a white knuckling sort of state; the suppressed state to which I am referring to. There are so many societal norms that are placed on us; the should and should not’s. What is the appropriate time to grieve after the loss of a loved one; a year, two years? Who is to say?

How long do we harbor resentment for the abuse we suffered from a parent or at the hand of a spouse or other family member?

What is the correct formula for dealing with these deep emotional issues? Unfortunately only a small percentage of Americans have been exposed to other healing modalities besides antidepressants. There is a time and place for these types of drugs; however they should be used sparingly and for the short term. Chronic depression needs to be addressed with a combination of modalities that work to get to the underlying cause, not just at the superficial level.

Homeopathy works at the molecular level to stimulate healing, and to uproot and clear the many layers that make up a life time of bumps and bruises, present in each and every one of us.
